Game Story

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (Ticker) -- Safety Ralph Turner's 23-yard interception return for a touchdown ignited a 21-point third quarter as Purdue rallied for a 28-15 victory over previously unbeaten Minnesota. Turner's touchdown, the second of his career, gave the Boilermakers (3-2, 1-0 Big Ten) the lead for good at 14-9 just 16 seconds in the second half. Joey Harris scored on a four-yard run before Kyle Orton tossed a three-yard TD pass to Shaun Phillips to give Purdue a 28-9 cushion. Purdue improved to 6-0 in Big Conference openers under Joe Tiller and posted its seventh straight win over Minnesota (4-1, 0-1). Dan Nystrom kicked three field goals in the second period to give the Golden Gophers a 9-7 lead. Minnesota's Asad Abdul-Khaliq tossed an eight-yard TD pass to Antoine Burns in the fourth period to account for the final score. Orton completed 19-of-32 passes for 190 yards for Purdue, while Harris rushed for 106 yards on 25 carries. He also scored on a two-yard run in the opening quarter to give the Boilermakers a 7-0 lead. Abdul-Khaliq passed for 233 yards, but completed just 16-of-48 passes with an interception. Purdue's recent winning streak has cut Minnesota's lead in the all-time series to 30-28-3. The Golden Gophers were seeking their first 5-0 start since 1987.
