Game Story

FORT COLLINS, Colorado (Ticker) -- Marion Barber III and Laurence Maroney ran Colorado State into its longest losing streak in 11 seasons. Barber rushed 31 times for 201 yards and two touchdowns and Maroney added 132 yards on 17 carries to lead No. 22 Minnesota to a 34-16 win over Colorado State. The Rams (0-3) have lost three straight games for the time since 1993 - coach Sonny Lubick's first season in Fort Collins. The Golden Gophers (3-0) took the initiative from the opening drive of the game, going 80 yards in just 1:50. Maroney had a 31-yard run to set up Barber's 20-yard TD. Barber, who posted his first career 200-yard game, responded to a Rams field goal with a 61-yard TD scamper with 2:45 left in the first quarter to make it 14-3. The second quarter saw Minnesota add to its lead with the first of three field goals by Rhys Lloyd and a 11-yard TD pass from Bryan Cupito to Matt Spaeth. That same combination connected for a 19-yard score in the third. Rams quarterback Justin Holland hit a wide-open Dustin Osborn right before the half to make the score 24-10 at the break. Colorado State was marching down the field in the first possesion of the second half but the drive stalled when Holland could not connect on a 4th-and-3 pass from the Minnesota 38. Not all the news was good for the Gophers. Cupito, who entered the contest second in the nation in pass efficiency, was knocked out of the game with a concussion with 3:42 left in the third when defensive lineman Patrick Goodpaster drove him into the ground with a clean but hard hit. Minnesota tied a school record with its 15th consecutive non-conference win and set a record with its 20th consecutive game with 20 points or more. The game marked the first time that a Big Ten Conference school visited Hughes Field.
