Game Story

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana (Ticker) -- Minnesota should have taken a history lesson before traveling to Indiana. Matt LoVecchio threw two touchdowns and Jarvis Green-Ellis ran for 110 yards as Indiana overcame a big first-quarter deficit to beat No. 23 Minnesota, 30-21, in a Big Ten Conference game. It was the seventh straight win at home for the Hoosiers against Minnesota, dating back to October 19, 1985. After spotting the Golden Gophers (6-3, 3-3 Big Ten) 14 points in the first quarter, the Hoosiers (3-5, 1-4 Big Ten) scored 23 straight points to take the lead. Will Lumpkin stepped in front of a receiver and intercepted a pass in the right flat and raced 42 yards for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 14-6. A mishandled snap prevented a extra-point kick. "(Lumpkin's interception) was probably the play of the game to get the momentum changed," Indiana coach Gerry Dinardo said. "I wouldn't say that we were flat, but we weren't energized until that play. We were having to deal with the wind and all of the other little things, and before you know it, we were down two scores." In the Hoosiers' next possession, David Lewis made a one-handed, juggling catch for 35 yards down the right side to the 11. LoVecchio lofted a 13-yard scoring pass into the left corner of the end zone to Courtney Roby but the two-point conversion failed when Roby was dropped for a loss on an option run. With 37 seconds left in the half, LoVecchio rolled to his right and hit Chris Rudanovic from five yards away and hit Lewis with the two-point conversion to give Indiana a 20-14 lead at the break. Bryan Robertson kicked a 23-yard field goal early in the third period to give Indiana a 23-14 lead. "The obvious progress was the way that we played in the second half," DiNardo said. "We had been in this situation before and hadn't come out of it like we wanted. We had a halftime lead against Michigan State and we couldn't hold it. There have been other times when we haven't played as well in the second half as we did in the first half. To me, that was the big positive today." Minnesota came back when Cupito hit Spaeth for a three-yard score but Green-Ellis burst up the middle and scored from 27 yards out early in the fourth to cap the scoring for Indiana, which had lost its last six conference games. LoVecchio hurt Minnesota with his arm and leg. He completed 13-of-26 passes for 161 yards without an interception and ran six times for 25 yards, including a 20-yard scramble to set up the Hoosiers' third TD of the first half. Green-Ellis had 92 yards rushing in the second half. "We just wanted to come out today and get our running game started, Green-Ellis said. "We have been sluggish in that area the past few games, so we just wanted to come out and execute our game plan. Their running game against ours is always a battle, but we focused more on executing our offense rather then going out there to prove a point." Indiana held the Big Ten's top offense in check. Minnesota, which came into the game first in the conference in scoring (38.7), rushing offense (289.2) and total offense (494.6), was limited to 174 yards rushing and 356 yards total. "I think we played a good game," Indiana safety Herana-Daze Jones said. "Our coaches schemed a great game. Last year was kind of embarrassing, and our coaching staff was working on this plan since the summer. The main thing was that we came out and executed the game plan." Laurence Maroney carried 16 times for 89 yards and Spaeth caught six passes for 95 yards for the Gophers. Cupito completed just 11-of-30 passes for 182 yards. "We had a lot of opportunities," Minnesota coach Glen Mason said. "We totally outplayed them last year and they totally outplayed us this year. "To get a 14-0 lead and then you make a mistake and you have a turnover, and not only do you have a turnover but you give up seven points and then give them the momentum. Then after that, every time it seemed like we were going to knock on the door or make a move, something happened."
