Game Story

MADISON, Wisconsin (Ticker) -- John Stocco and Anthony Davis took the suspense out of this one early. Stocco and Davis each accounted for two touchdowns in the first 18 minutes as fourth-ranked Wisconsin reclaimed "Paul Bunyan's Axe" with an emphatic 38-14 victory over Big Ten Conference rival Minnesota. A Minnesota native, Stocco completed 19-of-26 passes for a career-high 297 yards and a touchdown and ran for two scores for the Badgers (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten), who moved into a first-place tie with idle Michigan atop the conference standings. "I gave John the game ball," Badgers coach Barry Alvarez said. "You know, playing against your home state school is meaningful, and he had one of the better quarterback performances that we've had in a long time, so he certainly deserved it." "That's where I'm from. That's where I'm close to, where I grew up," Stocco said. "Obviously, every game is important, but playing Minnesota is just a little special for me, so it was just unbelievable to get the axe back." Wisconsin, which does not face the Wolverines, holds the tiebreaker for better overall record were they to finish in a first-place tie. Davis ran 31 times for 124 yards and two TDs for Wisconsin, which has won eight of the last 10 meetings with Minnesota in the most-played rivalry in Division I-A football. The Golden Gophers hold a 59-47-8 lead in the series and won last year's game, 37-34, on a 35-yard field goal by Rhys Lloyd with no time remaining. "It felt great to get the axe back," said Badgers star defensive end Erasmus James, who sat out their 24-12 win over Northwestern two weeks ago with an ankle injury. "We're 9-0, we look (to go) 1-0 every week and it's just a great opportunity to show these younger guys what we do here and how we want to keep this axe in its case." With 4,469 career rushing yards, Davis moved past Michigan's Jamie Morris into eighth place on the Big Ten's all-time list. "We weren't really focusing on them, our focus is on us," Davis said. "We know what we're capable of doing and all we can really worry about as an offense was coming out here and making a statement and having a breakout game." Stocco opened the scoring on a one-yard run 2:42 into the contest and made it 14-0 with a 17-yard touchdown toss to Jonathan Orr. Davis added a one-yard run late in the period and a two-yard score that opened a 28-0 advantage 2:16 into the second quarter. Playing before Camp Randall Stadium-record crowd of 83,069, the Badgers gained a season-high 525 yards. "Needless to say, we were dominated by Wisconsin," Gophers coach Glen Mason said. "For whatever reason, we didn't start that game ready to play. And if you're going to play against a quality team like Wisconsin, you'd better bring your 'A' game, and we obviously didn't." Minnesota trailed, 31-0, before Bryan Cupito connected on a 10-yard touchdown to Ernie Wheelwright with 4:07 left in the half. Cupito was 17-of-33 for 258 yards for the Gophers (6-4, 3-4), who have lost four of their last five games.
